Explainer Video: "How to Start a Nonprofit"

What I Did:

  • Motion Graphics & Animation

  • Visual Storytelling & Direction

  • Illustration & Iconography

  • Accessibility Enhancements (captions, pacing, legibility)

  • Sound Design & Editing

This was one of those projects that tested my creativity and patience—but ultimately turned into something I'm genuinely proud of.

Peter Rand at Good Point Creative brought me onto this project to create a five-minute explainer video for the Nonprofit Association of Washington (NAWA). The task was to clearly illustrate the steps involved in starting a nonprofit in Washington state, making it approachable and easy to understand for viewers.

From the start, the biggest challenge was the absence of creative direction. I didn't receive storyboards, mood boards, or specific visual guidelines, so I had to develop the entire visual concept from scratch. This meant crafting a clear visual narrative, designing all the illustrations and icons, and ensuring everything aligned smoothly with NAWA’s existing branding.

Creating five full minutes of detailed motion graphics and animations without a blueprint took much longer than anticipated, but it was well worth the effort. NAWA loved the final video, and knowing it’s actively helping people navigate the complexities of starting their own nonprofit organizations feels pretty amazing.
